Langside College - Croftfooot Primary School Project
SVQ Hairdressing student Jacqalyn Ferguson found life very difficult after having her second baby. Suffering from post-natal depression, Jacqalyn realised that she had to do something. When the local school sent a letter home to parents asking for help with the school choir, Jacqalyn decided this could be her opportunity “to do something I enjoyed, teaching children songs, and it gave me a purpose and something to look forward to.”
Jacqalyn found her confidence growing along with the choir and as well as school concerts and church services, the choir have taken part in the Glasgow Music Festival where the children were invited to sing at the Royal Concert Hall. The choir now has its sights set on entering the BBC School Choir of the Year Competition.
Miss Grant, Head Teacher at Croftfoot Primary School had no hesitation in singing Jacqalyn’s praise. “She is always well prepared and her motivation has inspired the children to do well. The children find the sessions more enjoyable and the standard has improved greatly.”
Jacqalyn found that her voluntary work with the choir had, in turn, given her the confidence to pursue her dream of enrolling at college, despite having to overcome some new difficulties. “I found it a real struggle coming to college as I had recently discovered I had both dyslexia and Meyers Allan Syndrome. My volunteering has kept me going and I hope my experience will encourage others to go to college.” Jacqalyn has kept going and she intends to come back next year for SVQ Level Three Hairdressing. Jacqalyn will soon be presented with her Gold Award for Volunteering while at Langside College, having tallied up a staggering 128 hours of volunteering whilst learning at Langside.
