One of the easiest and most useful starting points is to simply discover what is already happening within your college by asking both staff and students about their volunteering activity.

At the beginning of the Learning by Volunteering project the three participating colleges set out to gauge the level of interest and knowledge there already was within each college.  A very simple questionnaire was developed using Survey Monkey. Aimed at the staff of each college, the results were very useful in highlighting the levels of awareness, interest and activity and a baseline was set for each college.

They also sampled their students producing a student baseline sample. This highlighted the extent of volunteering that already existed in the student population.

There are ways that students can volunteer within colleges such as mentoring, class representitives. These are volunteering roles that enrich college life and support students.
